dhk Urban Concepts was engaged in by Joris and Natalie van Almenkerk to develop a master plan for the Estate, as well as to design the new 200 tonne winery.
Our involvement with the Estate planning included advising on the location of buildings such as new residences for the owners and estate manager, and the placement of the new winery. Attention was also given to the farm workers’ village and farm infrastructure.
The winery is fragmented into a number of buildings, their placement creating a protected court, opening to spectacular views across the valley. The private tasting lounge and offices is located as to enjoy this view while opening up to the court and entrance.
Each of the key functions is located in a separate building, with key buildings joined by light linking elements. The sequence of buildings follows the wine making process, with a flow of uses from grape reception, to fermentation, to barrel maturation and then to finished goods.
The fragmentation of the buildings has allowed for a more sensitive environmental response as the winery is located on a steep slope. It has also allowed us to create the well protected court, which is to become the main living space of the winery.
