dhk Urban Concepts was approached to develop an urban renewal strategy for the Eikestad Precinct in the historic core of Stellenbosch. This precinct encompasses an area of approximately three town blocks.

One of the major challenges was to transform an internalized shopping mall to become part of a vibrant, mixed use environment. Smaller active courtyards and public spaces will be introduced to encourage outdoor activity and support the street café culture of Stellenbosch.

The oak trees and old mill streams, courtyards and historically significant façades will be incorporated as an integral part of this precinct. The historic alignment and archeological remains of the Old Mill Stream will be expressed within a new courtyard behind the Panorama Building in Andringa Street. A clear pedestrian route from the tourist information centre in Market Street will guide tourists to the Millstream Alley, linking the Eikestad Precinct with the oldest part of Stellenbosch (Dorp Street and Church Street area) via the Millstream Alley.

The commemoration of the historical and social significance of this precinct will be an integral part of the renewal and conservation of this historic part of Stellenbosch.
